Why Couloir? - Mt Currie
8th March 2008

| After 2 years of aborted attempts we finally had a good weather report and enough people to fill a heli. Leaving Vancouver at 5am, Jesse, Grahame, Matt and myself headed up to Pemberton. Currie was all socked in for a couple hours in the morning, so we chilled out and napped in the heliport for a couple hours. Suddenly the clouds cleared, we were in the air and then on a steep ridge with only one way down, all within about 15 minutes. Standing on the top was a rather surreal moment, all the anticipation and waiting and suddenly we were here. A quick ski along the south side of the ridge got us to the to of the east Y couloir. After much furkling around we rapped into down and onto the slope. A short section of firm snow and then 4000ft of sustained skiing. |

With the fiddly bit over, we have 4000ft of turns before we have to start routefinding again. |

Looking Back |

The lower gullies below the peak are all tight and cliffy. Not the place to be as the sun warms the upper slopes. The trees were not much fun, but were safer. |
6 hours earlier we were up at the top of that ridge. |
